BOPE is probably the most famous unit in Brazil and abroad. There's a movie about it called 'Tropa de Elite' or 'Elite Squad' in english that was a huge success in Brazil. Great movie if you guys haven't seen it you should definitely check it out.

interesting i didnt know about all these federal police sub units...

since 2013 they got a contract with renault mitsubishi toyota and all units in parana are running on hilux and pajeros. Standard police is using renault duster and fluence

Solafor special ops police i think thats it but here in parana theres also GOE (Grupo de Operacoes Especias) from guarda municipal its a very small group and also environmental police which is a branch of military police

I forgot abour Policia Rodoviaria Federal (Highway Patrol Police) they have a specialized unit too called NOE.

I concur on the BOPE movies they both were awesome.

question with units like CORE and BOPE in some regions is there any jurisdictional hold ups?

Theoretically they have different missions (and in places like Rio de Janeiro there is plenty of action for both) but IMO the concept of having two separete polices is entirely wrong. Besides that they hardly work together and cost double the money for the government with equipment and personnel.

This kind of action by criminals is very common in Brazil they go to small towns where there's very few cops and take large numbers of people as hostages to act as shields and hold to police back in their scape.
