An interesting side note to this is that a friend of mine that is quite the historian once told me that he had read that Manfred Von Richthofen (the Red Baron) said that he had scored his very first aerial victory with an "automatic rifle". Does that ring a bell? Remember that at first aircraft in WWI were not equipped with synchronized machine guns and crews resorted to fire at the enemy with rifles and pistols.
