These guys seem pretty tactical and ready to kick in some doors
for an Investigatory branch can you shed some more light on how these
different units do their jobs? The investigation side are they
detectives or do they field street officers as it seems here or are they
using special units to make entry at dangerous locations in order to do
investigations or something completely different?

The best units have pretty similar training and are prepared to respond
to any situation. It also depends on who gets the call when something
happens if it was a Policia Militar operation they will call their guys
and if it was a Policia Civil investigation/operation they will call
their own guys.

The policemen from this picture are investigators detectives if
you may the Policia Civil doesn't patrol streets. They are as you've
deduced special units to make entry at dangerous locations to aprehend
suspects and the likes of it. Units like these on the Policia Civil were
born out of simple jealousy of the Military Police (Gendarmerie)
counterparts since they were the ones to originaly field tactical
intervention and urban warfare units. Though they often cooperate on the
field in order to suplement the number of tactical operators.
I once saw a documentary on TV about Brazils war on drug gangs.
It was kind of unreal. There was a raid into some favela. They entered
under the cover of darkness shot a few guys (using G3s btw) and then
retreated. Apparently they thought it was a good day because they had
only one casualty. It looked just like some military operation in
Afghanistan or whatever.
