Random old CAG, GSG-9 and other photos

Colt is currently using 6xxx series numbers as commercial designators. This really only matters to purists and my knowledge just scratches the surface - I still call all rifle sized ARs an M16 and anything shorter an M4.

Prior to the M4 the last DOD type designated carbine (aside from USAF Carbines which are a league unto themselves) was the Vietnam era XM-177E2 (actually considered an SMG at the time). Colt's commercial designation was the Model 629. Until the M4 was adopted a lot of units that had the funding and leeway to do so purchased commercial carbines from Colt outside of the normal U.S. Military procurement system. If you see pics of guys from Panama/Desert Storm/Somalia with carbines they are either COTS (commercial off the shelf) purchases or in the case of the USAF stuff that was still in service 20+ years after it had originally been issued.

Thanks James clear as crystal. My knowledge extended to the XM177 M4 M16 and the M4 10.5'. Then there is something between M16A2 and the Marines M116A4 or vice versa..

these pics come from a presentation carried by gen. Mulholand in SOFEX convention few years ago they were taken by a reserve CCT who got mobilized into OEF few weeks after it began. i had to PS the photos a bit as their original condition was really bad.
