The Bundeswehr released some awesome pictures of the Puma IFV which is about to replace the Marder in due time. According to the captions the images were taken during the hot climate tests in Abu Dhabi UAE mid October.

I think the Puma will look a lot more "complete" and ergonomic once the Spike (aka "MELLS" which is the starter system for Spike) is added. Than this strange looking gap on the turret hull will be fixed.

Stunning photos but when you look at the full res picture those black areas look like brush tables or carpets used to reduce friction when handling metal sheets on industrial machines. What's their use in this case?

My guess is that they are used as a buffer from the sun so that the IFV will get less hot in the desert sun.

On top of the turret and hull? It's an addon armory against bomblets. First in use in Bundeswehr at the PzH2000.

But the MELLS would be fit to the left side of turret. That strange looking gap on right side is the opening for chain links and empty shell (imho).

Edit: Nevermind I googled it a bit and I think I get the idea. Those are panels with lots of tiny rubber cylinders to disrupt shaped charges.
