At the moment the iraqi army is still using a lot of russian small arms and armour. Are there programs being put i place to provide iraqi military with new Nato standard equipment small arms and armour?

These are some pics from my rotation Mar 05 thru May 06. The pics of the vehicles I took while the ones of the IA in action were taken by an imbedded reporter from our local paper.

It took a little getting used to looking thru my sight and seeing a soviet style vehicle. Growing up on films like Red Dawn and Rambo and countless Bradley Gunnery tables planted a desire to shoot anything that fit the description. There were some Mi 24s around for a little while I think Ukrainian. Im scannin my sector then all of a sudden a Hind apears in my retical. "Gunner-Missle-Chopper!"

Thanks for the great pictures. While you were there what was your opinion of the IA? Are they making steady improvements as the pictures would suggest?

Might be a dumb question but are all these Aircraft flown by Iraqi pilots? Or do coalition pilots fly them. If so does anyone know what the time frame is to cross-train the existing pilots into the new aircraft?

                       Excellent thread. Its amazing to see such progress and effort pay off. My only worry is the government.

IIRC these patrol boats were from a pre-war contract to a Chinese company.

My concern is that much of the progress made my the Army will be compromised by the national Police.... These pics looks great. When that pic of the Predator unit with the digi camo came out it was like the second coming.

        Are these guys regular iraqi army troops or a special unit? They seem better equipped than some of their peers.

In the near term the IA is going to stay as a primarily infantry force. The US doesn't want them to acquire heavy weapons especially if a) the country breaks into civil war and b) the government already strongly Shiite aligns with Iran b/c then the weapons could likely be used on US troops.

Great to see them looking like a professional army.

I'm extremely impressed with the improvements since 2004 and the CPA. I had no idea that they had armor these days. congrats to them hopefully they can get some stuff done around there. It definitley bodes well for Iraq as a whole im sure it sways iraqi public opinion to see their own national army potrolling and fighting the insurgents/foreign fighters.

Are these common sigts? Or are these pictures propaganda aimed at misleading people. I personally think these look legit and I'm very impressed with the Iraqi army.

But I ask about the realistic-ness (SorryI'm pretty sur that's not a real word) of these pictures.

I'd say they wont live another week after US forces will leave Iraq if it ever happened.
